The pursuit of perfection

I’m sure most of you would agree that in this day and age, people are more than just obsessed with being perfect. And it’s mostly focused on looking perfect. Not even a single strand of hair should be out of place, the eyebrows need to be on fleek and the skin… flawless, of course. This idea that we have all infused in our mind is a reflection of society and now, a reflection of us. More often than not, when we speak of beauty, we automatically think of physical appearance. But what about inner beauty?

Sure, you’ll see some bloggers; YouTubers and motivational speakers touch upon the idea of inner beauty from time to time, but is it the main focus within the social order? No.

If you open your Instagram feeds, you’ll come across an extreme amount of make-up tutorials squashed into a minute’s worth of content; lip swatches of the latest Huda Beauty Lip Strobes on the perfect set of (filled) lips, or impeccably carved flawless faces thanks to the Kim K contour kit.

Let’s not forget about the two minute gym tutorials which end with ‘words of wisdom’ i.e. why you should buy this personal trainer’s ‘Miracle Weight Loss Package’ and how it will change your life forever by giving you the hour glass figure you have always dreamed of! Okay, maybe I’m being a bit too harsh because most of them do actually put emphasis on leading a healthy life and so on, and so forth but the highlight is still having that perfectly toned body. Right?

It is no longer normal to have a bit of flab on your tummy or have laugh lines around your mouth. This notion of perfection seems to have hit us all hard. So hard, that there is more self-hate than self-love, more time spent on getting the perfect selfie than concentrating on inner peace. Are we really, truly happy with ourselves if we are always seeking societies’ approval?

Anorexia, anxiety and depression are just some of the conditions linked to self-hate and under confidence. Standing in front of a mirror and beholding a reflection of what you believe ‘is not good enough’ can really take a toll on one’s emotions, thoughts and life in general. Just think about it … how awful is it that the concept of being perfect can dig up graves? Yet, we remain fixated on perfection.

I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but the more people gravitate towards lip fillers, boob jobs, nose jobs and botox; the more they start looking like one another. And those who cannot afford such exorbitant surgeries make do with the power of make-up. At the end of it, everyone looks the same.

This ideal of ‘perfection’ doesn’t just end there. Again, referring back to your Instagram feeds, how many people seem to have perfect lives? The perfect home, the perfect job, the perfect spouse. Well, sorry to burst your bubble but it’s not real. The things you see on social media are only a tiny percentage of their lives. Everyone has issues that they would much rather not share with the whole world. So stop trying to be them. You don’t know what they’ve got going on until you walk a mile in their shoes.

We chase something that we will never have because the view on what is perfect and what isn’t will always change with time. What’s ‘in’ today may be ‘old school’ tomorrow. So how about we just stop trying to be perfect for our societies and focus on trying to be perfect for ourselves? Ask yourself what things really matter to you, ask yourself what kind of a person YOU really want to be and what YOU want to look like. Don’t be afraid to be unique. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd and don’t be afraid to beyoutiful.

So go, grab a yoga mat and work on your breathing. Beauty comes from within, remember that.
